The Most Photogenic Cafés in Guildford (A Photographer’s Edit)

You know I'm that friend who will make you wait a couple of seconds (okay, maybe a little longer) before you can start drinking your coffee.
The coffee matters, of course. But the first thing I notice when I walk into a café is where the light falls, what's sitting on the counter and whether there's a corner I'd happily stay in for an hour. After more than ten years behind the camera, it's a habit I can't switch off.
If you're anything like me, you'll love this little list. These are three of my favourite cafés in Guildford, where you can enjoy a good coffee surrounded by beautiful interiors and picture-perfect corners.
The Boathouse, Millbrook
A firm favourite of mine, and a place I know very well. The Boathouse is also the home of Soulspace, the riverside co-working space we create content for, so I spend a lot of time here with my camera.
Sitting right on the banks of the River Wey, the building was designed to look like a traditional Victorian boathouse, with oak balconies, handmade tiles and big windows facing the water. The independent café and bar sits upstairs overlooking the river, with a terrace and garden deck below. Barista coffee, pastries and, later in the day, a spritz or a glass of wine. It feels like a little escape right in the heart of Guildford.
Why it photographs well: water bounces light back into everything, so even on a grey day you get a soft, flattering glow. Add natural textures, warm oak and the trees turning copper along the river, and the setting does half the work for you.
What I'd shoot: a short reel. A slow pan from the water to a table on the terrace, a cup being set down, steam rising. Ten seconds that make people want to be there.

Megan's by the Castle, High Street
Full of character, greenery and Mediterranean-inspired details, at the top of the High Street just a few steps from Guildford Castle. There are so many pretty corners to photograph. (The brunch is pretty good too, I have to say.)
Megan's describes its menu as "food from sunny places", with Eastern Mediterranean flavours, mezze and generous sharing plates served from brunch through to dinner. Fairy lights and warm interiors make it especially cosy as the evenings draw in, and it's dog friendly too.
Why it photographs well: plants, warm colours and twinkling lights give you layers in every frame. It's the kind of place where you can shoot the same table five different ways and still find something new.
What I'd shoot: a brunch spread of sharing plates framed by greenery, with a coffee in hand coming into the shot. Lush, warm and a little bit Mediterranean, which is exactly my kind of place.

A quick note for café owners: if you're reading this thinking "our place is lovely, but our Instagram doesn't show it", you're not alone. I created a free guide, The One Day Content Playbook, to help small businesses plan and shoot a month of content in a single day. Grab your free copy here.
Coppa Club, The Guildford Townhouse
Stylish interiors, vintage touches and cosy corners. Perfect for a coffee date or a slow morning in town.
Set in the iconic Burton's building on Guildford's cobbled High Street, Coppa Club spreads across three floors. There's a café and workspace on the ground floor, a brasserie in the middle and The Burton Bar at the top, reached by a beautiful mural-led staircase. Come for breakfast pancakes and coffee in the morning, or stay on for a spritz.
Why it photographs well: it's styled with real care, from the furniture to the lighting, and every floor has its own mood. When a space has a clear look, every photo feels consistent and on brand.
What I'd shoot: a slow-morning moment downstairs. A coffee on the table, soft light, a good book. Then the staircase mural on the way up, because details like that are what people share.

So what actually makes a café photogenic?
It's rarely about having the most expensive interior. These three have a few things in common:
Good light, used well. A seat by the window or the water is worth more than any filter.
A signature detail. A river view, fairy lights and greenery, a mural staircase. Something people remember and want to share.
A feeling. Calm, lush, cosy. People don't just share what they drink. They share how a place made them feel.
The good news? Every café has these things. The trick is noticing them, and then showing them consistently.
Want your café to look this good online?
Consistency is usually where it falls apart. Not because café owners lack ideas, but because there's never time to shoot when you're busy running the place.
That's exactly why I created The One Day Content Playbook. It's the simple process I use to plan, shoot and organise a month's worth of content in just one day, so your feed finally looks like the place people fall in love with in person.
I'm always on the lookout for more beautiful spots. In fact, I already have another one in mind that I'll be photographing very soon. Are there any others that should make it onto the list? I'd love to discover your favourites :)
